Team Rehab Hiawatha Homes
Benefit Adventure a Success!
By: Ryan Enke, M.D.

On May 19, 2007, several residents from the Mayo Clinic department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation competed in the Root River Triathlon. The event took place in Houston, Minnesota. Over $1,600 in pledges were collected for Hiawatha Homes.
The idea for this fundraiser began as a resident class adventure project.

As a group, our goal was to choose an event that would promote teamwork, adventure, and fun. In addition, we wanted to raise money for a local rehabilitation oriented charity. We had the opportunity to visit Hiawatha Homes earlier in the year and were very impressed with the services they provide in our community. We felt Hiawatha Homes would be a great fit for our fundraising goals.

Team Rehab was powered by Michael Turner and Peter Bailey who navigated the mighty Root River in the canoe. Diana Kurmen-Figueroa survived an unfortunate bike malfunction and was somehow still able to complete the bike course. Ryan Enke blazed a fast run during the sweltering heat. Team Rehab finished 11th in the team division. Other known Rehab competitors included Hannah Garry and her mom (Both took 2nd in their respective age groups and Hannah was the 8th female overall!).

Finally, Mike Gruba finished an impressive 6th overall and won the 21-30 age group. Overall, it is safe to say we all had a blast training and competing in the race. We look forward to making this an annual tradition and hope to encourage greater participation in the years to come. Thank you to Med City Mobility, Anderson's Wheelchairs and Prosthetic Laboratories of Rochester for donating to our cause, in addition to the individual donors from the department of Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation at Mayo Clinic.
